Felicitation Ceremony for Emeritus Professor Savitri Goonesekere

On February 10, 2023, a felicitation ceremony was held to honor Professor Savitri Gunasekara. The ceremony paid tribute to her remarkable contributions to Sri Lankan legal education, including her role in introducing the Bachelor of Laws degree programme and becoming the first female Vice-Chancellor of a Sri Lankan university. The event took place in a grand manner at the Jetwing Colombo Seven Hotel in Ward Place, Colombo-07.
The ceremony was attended by esteemed guests, Hon Attorney General, President’s Counsel Mr. Sanjay Rajaratnam, His Lordship Hon. Justice M.T. Mohammed Laffar – Judge of the Court of Appeal and a Patron of the Association, Honourable Justice Dr. Sumudu Premachandra and a Patron of the Association, Mr. Saliya Pieris President’s Counsel and Former President BASL, Dr. Nishantha Sampath Punchihewa – Dean, Faculty of Law, University of Colombo, Dr. Athula Pathinayake, Principal, Sri Lanka Law College, Mr. Chethiya Goonesekere, President’s Counsel – Additional Solicitor General, Professor. Camena Guneratne – Senior Professor in the Department of Legal Studies OUSL.
The ceremony was also graced by the presence of Prof. Kamina Gunaratna, the current President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka, Mr. Kaushalya Navaratne, and other dignitaries, accompanied by lawyers representing the President’s counsel. It was a momentous occasion to celebrate Professor Savitri Gunasekara’s significant achievements and her tireless dedication to the field of legal education in Sri Lanka.
